The ankle locks up but there is no pain indicates edema in the ankles and in the foot. (1) When one stands on the leg(s), does the ankle hurt? (2) Look at the ankle and the foot to see if there is any swelling. If there is swelling, then use the thumb or finger to press the ankle area. If it does not hurt, then there is edema in the ankle.
