Usually 6 lb. or 8 lb. dumbbells would be appropriate for a healthy female and a healthy young male to carry and walk with.
The dumbbells increase the efficiency of the workout and for females who are potential subjects of stalking and violent attack, having two dumbbells in hand provides a lot of protection.
Just think how it would be to be hit by an 8 lb. dumbbell on the cheek and face. Potential criminals would also think twice before approaching a person with two heavy weight dumbbells in hand.
