Corn starch company severely pollutes Tengeli Desert

A company called the Wuwei Ronghua Industrial and Trading company of Wuwei city in Gansu province had set up a corn starch and glutamic acid production facility in the Tengeli Desert 23 kilometers east of Wuwei city.  The area is known as the “great sands of eighty li”.  Drone monitoring flights and GPS positioning found 23 pools of polluted sand covering 266 mu of land.  The plant dumped a total of 271,654 tons of sludge, and 83,715 tons of it was piped through buried pipes directly into the desert sand between May 28, 2014 and March 6, 2015.
