Do not feed the macaques!

Do not feed the macaques!

In 1980, there were 30 macaques, i.e., Rhesus monkeys, in the Qianlingshan park in Guiyang city.  Their numbers grew to 200 in 1996 and over 500 in 2010.  The rapid increase was the result of tourists and visitors illegally feeding them and throwing food at them.  The monkeys lost their fear of people, and began to attack them.  In 2003, 72 people were bitten by the monkeys.  In 2004, 253 people were attacked.  In 2005, 505 people were attacked.  In 2006, 727 people were attacked.  In 2007, 1,008 people were attacked.  In 2008, 1,341 people were attacked.  In 2009, 1,567 people were attacked.  In 2010, 1,604 people were attacked.  In 2011, 1,529 people were attacked.  In 2012, 1,254 people were attacked.  In 2013, 1,271 people were attacked.  And in 2014, 1,480 people were attacked.  From 2003 to 2014, a total of 12,611 people were attacked.  In 2008, a monkey broke a tree branch, and the tree branch fell onto the head of a female tourist.  The tree branch penetrated the woman’s skull.  She is now in a vegetative state.  In August, 2011, an eight-month-old baby boy was attacked by a monkey while the baby’s diapers were being changed.  The monkey chewed off the baby boy’s right testicle and ate it.
