Desert rat infestation in Ejin Banner, Alxa League, Inner Mongolia

Desert rats have infested 180,000 mou or 28.5% of the saxaul (Haloxylon ammodendron) trees in the Ejin Banner, Alxa League, of Inner Mongolia, and have severely damaged 85,000 mou of the trees.  The area is part of the Gobi Desert and the saxaul trees are the only economic crop in the area.  Desert rats have chewed off the bark of the trees.
