Ugly incivility and psychosocial dysfunction

On June 16, 2015, a patient at the West Campus Hospital of the First Subsidiary Hospital of the Guangxi Medical University poured gasoline on a doctor in front of an elevator and lit him on fire.  The doctor suffered third degree burns.

On June 7, 2015, a nurse at the First Subsidiary Hospital of the Kunming Medical University was hacked by a man with a Chinese cleaver.  The nurse suffered severe wounds.

On June 5, 2015, a doctor at the Second Hospital in Yulin city in Shaanxi province was beaten up when he tried to stop a patient from inserting in line.  The doctor received injury to his left eye.

On June 3, 2015, a nurse at the Shenzhen Hospital of Hong Kong University was beaten by a patient.  On the same day, a doctor of internal medicine who was trying to help a patient at the Rongcheng County People’s Hospital in Baoding City in Hebei province was beaten up by the patient’s family members.

Between May 28 and June 16, 2015, there have been at least 12 such incidents throughout mainland China.

Attacking and killing doctors and health workers has happened in remote areas controlled by the Taliban and in Africa where ignorance prevails and where people do not believe in Western medicine.  However, attacks on medical staff on the Chinese mainland have always been retaliatory.

This is serious psychosocial dysfunction!
