Taiwan’s educational efforts towards internationalization
Tainan city mayor Lai Ching-de attended a administrative conference of high school and junior high school and elementary school principals on January 28, 2016, to campaign for his program to make English the official second language in the city of Tainan. He wants junior high schools and elementary schools to provide one all English class per week beginning in the current 2016 school year. The principals did not indicate any opposition to the program but some teachers suggested that test classes should be conducted first for fifth and sixth grade elementary school students and at junior high schools before system wide implementation. The mayor says that he wants teachers of these classes to teach in English and speak less Chinese in class to teach students listening and speaking skills and use English as a communications tool rather than an academic subject.
