Taiwan’s social consciousness

Emergence of Taiwan’s social consciousness

A Taiwanese writer writes that a new social consciousness has emerged in Taiwanese society based on a keen awareness of environmental and ecological protectionism, coexistence with nature, the Buddhist concept of the equality of all living beings, multiculturalism, multilingualism and the aboriginal concept that all things have spiritual essence.  A social wisdom that shuns vicious capitalistic competition and the relentless pursuit of the maximization of personal gain to the detriment of others has formed.  “Cooperation” for the public good has become the essence of society and social behavior as demonstrated by the unselfish cooperation in the joint rescue efforts in the aftermath of the February 6, 2016, Tainan earthquake disaster.  This sociological observation would indicate that the Taiwanese society is now a mature benevolent social democracy in the European sense.
