New influenza cases and deaths in Taiwan
Between March 20 and March 26, 2016, there were 83 new cases of influenza and 49 deaths from complications. During that week, 100,000 people visited hospitals and clinics compared to 145,000 visitors in the previous week from March 13 to March 19.
Of the 83 new cases, 67% were from H1N1 viral infections and 20% were influenza B. Among the 49 deaths was a 3-year-old boy who had congenital muscular dystrophy. He came down with the flu on February 26, and died of heart and lung failure on March 22. Test showed that he died from the H1N1 infection. The boy did not receive any flu shots for this flu season.
There have been 1,861 cases of influenza with severe complications this flu season with 1,456 H1N1 viral infections and 178 influenza B cases.
According to the Disease Control Administration of the Health and Welfare ministry report on March 29, 2016, 70% of influenza cases are now influenza type B.
