Taiwan’s achievements in treating MDR-TB

From 2005 to 2015, the annual rate of increase of multiple drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) on Taiwan dropped 6% from 440 patients in 2007 down to 184 patients in 2015.

Taiwan’s intensive care for MDR-TB patients requires medication twice a day, seven days a week over a course of two years, now shortened to 9 months, and the treatment success rate is now 77%.

In 2015, only 0.8% of all newly discovered tuberculosis patients were MDR-TB, and among the MDR-TB patients, 10% are imported TB cases, i.e., TB brought into Taiwan by tourists and foreign laborers who come to Taiwan to work.
