No dogs and cats in the forest!

No dogs and cats and other mammals in the forest!

From August 1, 2016, to July 31, 2017, dogs and cats will not be allowed in the forested areas of Taiwan because of rabies infected Chinese ferret badgers are still being found.

In 2016, so far, there have been 7 cases of people being bitten by rabies infected Chinese ferret badgers (Melogale moschata).  In 2015, there were 4 such cases.

According to the letter of the ban, dogs, cats and other mammals are not allowed in the forested areas where Chinese ferret badgers roam.

Are humans and the owners of dogs and cats also mammals?

Taiwan eliminated dog to dog transmission of rabies in 1961.  However, on July 16, 2013, after 52 years, rabies was found in the Chinese ferret badgers roaming in the forested areas of Taiwan.
