At the end of 2016, China’s population was 1,382,710,000 people, an increase of 8,090,000 from 2015. In 2016, 17,860,000 Chinese mainland babies were born, and 9,770,000 Chinese mainland people died.
A 2015 survey of the willingness to have a second child shows that 74.5% do not want a second child because of financial burden, 61.1% say having a second child is too exhausting physically, 60.5% say there is nobody to take care of a second child. Another survey of 100,000 responses conducted on January 28 to February 2, 2016, of 23.1% men and 76.9% women shows that 24% say they do not have the physical strength to take care of a second child, 21.9% say their household financial situation does not allow them to have a second child, 15.3% say social welfare is deficient for having a second child, 10.4% say basic education is unsound for having a second child, 7.6% say public sanitation conditions are unsound to have a second child, 5.7% say the parents’ health condition does not allow them to have a second child, 1.9% say having a second child was opposed by other family members, 8.2% say having a second child will be detrimental to seeking employment of job advancement, 1% say having one child is just right, and 4% say “other”.
