Lower limb paralysis due to EV D68 found

In the week of October 29 to November 4, 2017, 12,214 persons suffering from enterovirus diseases visited Taiwan’s emergency clinics.  Most of them were the Coxsackie A type viral infection.  There was one case of EV 71 viral infection and one case of EV D68 viral infection of a 5-yer-old girl.

The girl had fevers in October and her lower limbs lost strength.  The condition worsened so she was hospitalized.  An MRI of her brain showed there was inflammation in the spinal grey matter.

Since 2014, there has been 42 cases of EV D68 infections, and 5 of them were diagnosed in 2017.
