More Hong Kong residents are buying homes in Taiwan
According to HSBC, Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank, more Hong Kong residents are buying homes in Taiwan.
HSBC data shows that in the first quarter of 2018, home loans have increased by 300% compared to the same period a year ago.
Hong Kong buyers of homes in Taiwan consist mostly of Hong Kong businessmen, Hong Kong retirees, and 侯鳥夫妻, “migratory bird couples” or “migratory couples”.
The term 侯鳥夫妻 refers specifically to couples who reside in Hong Kong but work in Taiwan. They buy a home in Taiwan for convenience, and many prefer Taipei or Taichung homes. Hong Kong retirees generally purchase Taiwan homes of NT$30,000,000 or less.
There are many benefits living in Taiwan. The cost of living in Taiwan is low. Medical services are easily available and medical costs are low. Taiwan has universal healthcare. Taiwan’s transportation network is developed, and school choices are plenty.
Hong Kong immigrants to Taiwan say their motivation is for retirement and is apolitical.
