How Yunlin uses kitchen waste

When the new female Kuomintang’s Yunlin county magistrate Chang Li-shan took office on December 25, 2018, she immediately ordered a ban on using kitchen waste to feed hogs.

So far, the county collects 35 tons of kitchen waste a day for processing into organic fertilizers.

Raw and cooked kitchen waste are separately treated.  Raw kitchen waste is first dehydrated, then used as compost.  Cooked kitchen waste is pulverized to become 20% organic matter and then used as organic fertilizers to improve soil quality.

The kitchen waste collection rate throughout the county is now 94%.  Eventually, kitchen waste will also be used to produce methane for electricity generation.
