Why do so many Taiwanese women die giving birth?

Between June 2016 and the end of 2017, there were 22 cases of women who died at giving birth.  They were giving birth to their first born, and they were between 36 and 40 years old.

On Taiwan, the average age of the mother giving birth to her first born is 32 years old.

In 2008, 13 mothers died at giving birth.  In 2009 there were 16.  In 2010 there were 7.  In 2011 there were 10.  In 2012 there were 20.  In 2013 there were 18.  In 2014 there were 14.  In 2015 there were 25.  In 2016 there were 24.  In 2017 there were 19.

Taiwanese doctors blame the advanced age of the pregnant mother for such high rates of death at giving birth.
