Chinese Numerology

Chinese Numerology

Straight interpretation of numbers is the least complicated and the easiest to practice.  Each number is assigned a meaning or interpretation.  The combination and juxtaposition of single digit numbers and double digit numbers are then read and interpreted.

Here is the straight interpretation of numbers that I use:

Zero, 0,  indicates a comma, a gap, an end, the void, and is interpreted as part of a double digit number (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 80, 90).

One, 1, birth, the beginning

Two, 2, maturity, adulthood

Three, 3, old age

Four, 4, death, termination, end of an era

Five, 5, nothingness, emptiness, inactivity, continuation without change

Six, 6, rebirth, another beginning, 6=1

Seven, 7, success, accomplishment, ascension of the soul

Eight, 8, full success, full completion, happiness, completion of a cycle

Nine, 9, before the beginning, waiting for a new beginning, end of a cycle, before the beginning of a new cycle

These definitions are based on traditional Chinese interpretations.  A string of numbers is thus interpreted accordingly.

Any string of numbers can be interpreted.  These include birthdays (year, month, day, hour), telephone numbers, street number of a house, social security number, etc.

The numbers can also be added together as single digit numbers or as double digit numbers.  The sum as a two-digit or three-digit number is then rendered further by adding the single digits until a single digit number is obtained.  The interpretation is then based on that final number.  In some cases, double digit numbers indicate the number of years or age, for example, the number of years one has been working at one job, or at what age one’s family moved, or at what age one left one’s family, or at what age one left one’s native country and emigrated to America, etc.

Caution

In playing with numerology, one must not be too casual about the reading.  I once read a house number that indicated that every three years, a family member dies.  The family had been living in that house for about eleven years and two family members had died three years apart. I casually commented that another family member may die soon.  Two weeks later, the person who asked me about the house number committed suicide with a pistol shot to the head.

Interpretations in hindsight

1280 and 1281

Khubilai Khan launched his naval attack on Japan in 1280 and was defeated in 1281. The numbers 1 = beginning;  2 = maturity;  8 = completion of a cycle;  0 = comma, nothing.  Kubilai had begun and completed his period of naval shipbuilding and launched his attack with false hopes but accomplished nothing.  His defeat in 1281 forced Yuan dynasty China to start in 128(1) to rebuild its navy, and in 128(2) (maturity), the Yuan dynasty began maritime trade to the south and launched an attack on Burma.

1405 and 1421

In 1405, Zheng Ho, the eunuch naval general was sent on his first naval journey to the South Seas.  He returned to China and was sent off again with his massive naval fleet in 1421.  he returned to China in 1422.  1=beginning, 4=termination, 0=comma, void; 5=a continuation, void.  Adding the numbers 1+4+0+5=10, and 14+5=19.  Nothing much exciting would be happening from 10 to 19 years following the year 1405.  Massive ships were being built for Zheng Ho’s fleet during those years.  In 142(1), there was a new beginning.  The eunuch general was sent to sea again in that year.   He returned to China in 14(2)(2), maturity.

Curious

The numbers of September 11, 2001 are 9112001.  Adding the numbers 9+1+1=11.  Adding 11+2001=2012.  Do these numbers of September 11, 2001, indicate that some major disaster equally devastating might occur in 2012?

There are several ways that one can adapt the Chinese character stroke count to an alphabet based language.  One is to count the number of strokes needed to write a letter in cursive script.  the letters i, j and t would have two strokes while the other letters would have one continuous stroke.  Another way is to assign numbers to each letter, thus A=1, B=2, … Z=26.  As long as a string of single digit numbers is produced, it can be read.

The weight of life is a system of assigning “weights” to the lunar year, the lunar month, the day and the hour of a person’s birth to prognosticate his or her course in life.  It is a major system of Chinese fortune telling found in the Chinese almanac.  Another major system is to assign weights to names of people and businesses.  This system relies on the number of written strokes of the characters of the names.  In the adaptation example above, the name “Smith” written in cursive would consist of “s,m,h” as single stroke letters, s=1, m=1, h=1, and “i, t” as double stroke letters, i=2, t=2.  Thus, the name “smith” would produce a number 1+1+2+2+1=7.  The “weight” of the name “Smith” would be “7”.

The year and its weight

Two systems are used for the weight of a year.  One is the liang and qian weight system.  The other is the gong and du system equivalent to a decimal point system.

The year and its weight in liang and qian units

The Chinese use the liang and the qian as weight measurements.  A liang is a tael or a Chinese “ounce” equivalent to 50 grams.  A qian is equivalent to 5 grams.  Each year has its own weight.  Different years of the same animal sign have different weights.  The weights are assigned according to the order of permutation of the ten Heavenly Stems and the twelve Earthly Branches.  Their permutation produces a cycle of 60 years.  The assigned weights run a five 12-year course of a 60-year cycle.  For example, each year between 1924 and 1984 has a “weight”.  The “weight” of 1924 repeats itself in 1984.   A weight is assigned to a two-hour period.  Thus the 24-hour day has twelve two-hour periods and each period has a unique weight.  Then each day has a “day weight.”  Each month has a “month weight.”  The almanac then lists the weights of each year under its animal sign.  For example, 1900 is the Year of the Rat and it weighs 7 qian.  The year 1912 which is the next Year of the Rat weighs 5 qian.  The next Year of the Rat is 1924 and it weighs 1 liang 2 qian

The gong du system for the weight of a year

The measurement gong means a “palace, temple” equivalent to the “house” in Western astrology.  The measurement du means “degree.”  This is a decimal system in which 1 gong = 10 du.   Under this system, the years with the same animal signs have the same weights, unlike the previous system in which different years of the same animal sign have different weights.  The decimal system also takes into consideration the month, the day and the hour of one’s birth, each having its own decimal value.  For example, the Year of the Rat has a decimal value of 3.8; January has a decimal value of 1.2; the first day of the lunar month has a decimal value of 1.0; the hour 0000-0100 hours has a decimal value of 3.2.  Adding these decimal values together, one gets a sum.  The smaller the sum, the harsher one’s life will be.  A life weight of 4.4 is a life of begging and wondering.  A life weight of 14.2 is a life of riches and high social status.

Chinese Animal Signs

Chinese animal signs not only mark the years, but also play a major role in deciding a person’s fate.  Each animal is assigned its own personality, abilities, propensities, temperament, and attributes.  Each person is born under an animal sign and the person’s personality is thus defined by that of its animal.  I was born in the year of the Monkey, so my personality is that of a monkey.  The Chinese almanac has two tables of  compatibility of animal signs for consultation.  One is a table of marriage matches and mismatches.  The other is personal relationship matches and mismatches.  The personal relationships table is a multiplication table of 12×12=144 matches and mismatches with detailed descriptions.

The Marriage compatibility Table

This table is consulted by parents who have marriageable children.  And based on this table of compatibility and incompatibility, you may not get to marry the one you love but the one your parents may have chosen for you instead.  The almanac also gives detailed descriptions of how badly the marriage may turn out if you insist on marrying someone who is incompatible with you.  You defy the advice, you will have to bear all the risks and the consequences of a marriage that will go sour, that is, according to the Chinese almanac.

The 12 animal signs are the rat, the ox, the tiger, the hare, the dragon, the snake, the horse, the ram, the monkey, the rooster, the dog, and the boar.

A rat should not marry a ram, a horse, a hare, or a rooster.

An ox should not marry a dragon, a horse, a ram, or a dog.

A tiger should not marry a snake or a monkey.

A hare should not marry a rat, an ox, a dragon, or a rooster.

A dragon should not marry an ox, a hare, a dog, or a dragon.

A snake should not marry a tiger, a monkey or a boar.

A horse should not marry a rat, an ox, a hare, or a horse.

A ram should not marry a rat, an ox, or a dog.

A monkey should not marry a tiger, a snake or a boar.

A rooster should not marry a rat, a hare, a rooster, or a dog.

A dog should not marry an ox, a dragon, a ram or a rooster.

A boar should not marry a snake, a monkey or a boar.

The Chinese almanac describes each disastrous marriage differently with different family histories and outcomes.
