Abuse of seniors increases in Taiwan

Statistics of the past 10 years show that abuse of seniors has increased, more female seniors than male seniors have been abused, and 50% of senior abuse cases have occurred between the ages of 65 and 71.

In 2007, there were 3224 senior abuse cases, constituting 4.74% of all domestic violence cases, and of these abused seniors, 1428 were men and 1796 were women.

In 2008, there were 3647 senior abuse cases, constituting 4.87% of all domestic violence cases, and of these abused seniors, 1530 were men and 2117 were women.

In 2009, there were 4446 senior abuse cases, constituting 5.35% of all domestic violence cases, and of these abused seniors, 1918 were men and 2528 were women.

In 2010, there were 5295 senior abuse cases, constituting 5.41% of all domestic violence cases, and of these abused seniors, 2167 were men and 3128 were women.

In 2011, there were 5202 senior abuse cases, constituting 5.58% of all domestic violence cases, and of these abused seniors, 2135 were men and 3067 were women.

In 2012, there were 5702 senior abuse cases, constituting 5.85% of all domestic violence cases, and of these abused seniors, 2268 were men and 3434 were women.

In 2013, there were 6324 senior abuse cases, constituting 5.81% of all domestic violence cases, and of these abused seniors, 2473 were men and 3851 were women.

In 2014, there were 6759 senior abuse cases, constituting 7.23% of all domestic violence cases, and of these abused seniors, 2515 were men and 4244 were women.

In 2015, there were 7160 senior abuse cases, constituting 7.56% of all domestic violence cases, and of these abused seniors, 2664 were men and 4496 were women.

In 2016, there were 8257 senior abuse cases, constituting 8.77% of all domestic violence cases, and of these abused seniors, 3118 were men and 5139 were women.

In 2017, there were 9006 senior abuse cases, constituting 9.52% of all domestic violence cases, and of these abused seniors, 3395 were men and 5611 were women.

Incompatibility of life style, substance abuse and alcohol abuse by the younger generation in the family are being noted as causes of abuse of seniors.
